"You're wrong," he says to the windows, although their reflected heaven means they're closed to him; his words won't pass through. "You're wrong here. China isn't Europe. Your monsters are not our youkai."

The windows glint politely at him. They'll never say his name. He'll never touch them. He doesn't care to, in fact--just wishes he could.

"I've been them all," he tells blue glass. "Human, a monster--a youkai can be, at least, humane."

They'll never show him their back--but there's a man behind them somewhere, surely?

Surely. Somewhere.

"When too late teaches you," he promises, "your sempai won't smile."
